Hormonal changes can happen at any time throughout a woman’s life. However, women will not know when her estrogen levels are too high or too low, she only feels the symptoms.
The notable periods of significant hormonal change occur during puberty and at midlife. Women need to note that the highest degree of hormonal changes will happen during midlife during a phase known as perimenopause, a natural yet complex transition which can start any time between the ages of 40 - 56 years. This transition can last up to 10-15 years until a woman reaches menopause.
Estrogen is the primary female hormone in the body. Estrogen levels can fluctuate at any time influenced by stress, hormone pills and even hormonal compounds in the diet. During perimenopause however, estrogen will begin fluctuating in an up-down pattern over the years in a declining pattern by default. Changes in menstruation will occur within this period alongside various physiological and psychological symptoms.
As estrogen regulate more than 400 different functions in th body, different body systems will start emitting various symptoms when it senses a a shift in estrogen levels. This explains why hormonal imbalances wreck so much havoc on a woman‘s well-being.
